slog [sla:g]:

  • Verb - to work hard and steadily; to toil

  • Noun - a long period of hard, difficult, or tiring work

  • Synonyms: work, sweat, endeavor, strive, hustle

  • Sample sentences:

    • “Behind every win is a trail of tough days, long hours, and the steady slog that nobody talks about.”

    • “Greatness isn’t made in the spotlight, but in the steady slog when nobody else is grinding.”

    • “Champions choose the slog while others choose comfort—and that’s the difference.”

SLog Score = S + M + P​

  • SLog Score approximates the total number of Hours Practiced​

  • S = Sport Specific Skills​

    • All hours counted equally​

  • P = Physical Training

    • Default allowance is up to 30% of "S" hours​

    • Since some sports require more physical preparation, PT Contribution can be adjusted

  • M = Mental Preparation​

    • Only up to 10% of "S" hours​

    • "M" prepares the mind, but does not trump practicing the skills of your sport

  • This is the one consistent area athletes do focus on, but likely not enough. 

  • If you really want to excel, you have to put in the time. 

  • You need to practice your skills and get game experience.

  • This area is both overemphasized in some sports and underemphasized in others. 

  • Speed, agility, plyometrics, strength, endurance, and flexibility must all be considered when developing the right physical training program for your sport.

  • If you want to excel, you need to invest the time and strive for the right combination of these.

Physical Preparation

  • Understanding a sport including the skills and strategy are what will separate a good athlete from a great player . . . and a good team from a winning team. 

  • The most neglected area.

  • And yet, there has never been more information available to coaches and players than today.

  • The internet provides access to YouTube, TikTok, and websites which feature advice and teachings from the best athletes and coaches from all levels. 

  • Educate yourself about your sport, learn new skills, understand strategy, review film - be a student of the game
